The main problem facing those affected by common food allergies is they do not always know the composition of the food they eat. One drawback is not specific on packaged foods since, by law, expressly mentioned on the label all the ingredients recognized among the most common food allergens such as dairy products, legumes (including peanuts and soybeans), eggs, crustaceans, fish, vegetables, wheat and cereals containing gluten, nuts, celery, mustard and sesame seeds and products derived from these foods, as well as sulfites. The risk to take one of these “forbidden” foods is greater when dining out at a restaurant, cafeteria or whenever you buy products in bulk without label.

In the restaurant it is customary for some of the dishes offered on a regular basis as common as thickeners contain wheat flour or flavorings such as cream. Ingredients which, while seemingly harmless, are toxic in case of intolerance or food allergies. A dish of peas with ham or stew meat can be prepared by a spoonful of wheat flour or several slices of toasted bread to thicken the sauce. For this reason, until the approval of the rule requiring restaurants to inform customers of the composition and the exact ingredients that make each dish, we must act with common sense. When in doubt, you ask the waiter or cook if cooked dish containing the food is toxic. And if the answer is not satisfactory, either the ingredients or ignorance, the best recipe is to not try.

If those affected by this type of allergy are the children, parents are responsible for alerting their teachers, guardians and even chef of the canteen on the allergy-causing foods. Among the various activities carried out in recent years highlights the drafting of a nutritional protocol that includes a section on menus for special diets in the dietary recommendations set out to instances of intolerance to gluten and food allergy. It is mandatory that these recommendations may hear staff working in the catering company in the kitchen and at school.

The main diagnostic tools for assessing food allergies and intolerances are medical history, skin tests, blood analytics that determine the number of specific immunoglobulin or IgE (allergic individuals have, in general, higher levels of these antibodies in your body) and allowances of exposure or provocation.

Before making this type of test is excluded from the patient’s diet for a few days all foods suspected of causing allergy. If the patient has not improved after two weeks of strict exclusion diet, it is understood that it is unlikely that allergy is the cause of their symptoms. If after such an exclusion diet improves clearly affected, there will be evidence of provocation, provided in a hospital equipped with the necessary resuscitation measures in case of anaphylaxis. During the observation period shall be a detailed record of the quantity administered, time and events that occur.

Allergic reactions: main symptoms

The most representative symptoms of allergic reactions have generally around the mouth as a rash around the mouth, itching in and around the area of the pharynx.

Skin symptoms like hives, swelling of the lips and eyelids. You can give a serious situation if the edema is located in the larynx and can cause an obstruction to airflow. It manifests itself in a hoarse voice and difficulty in breathing and swallowing.

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Respiratory symptoms as sneezing, runny nose and itchy watery red eyes and swollen eyelids, and in a timely manner, with symptoms of asthma (cough, fatigue and wheezing in the chest).

After being exposed to a substance for the first time, a person’s immune system becomes sensitive and in a later exposure, an allergic reaction can occur suddenly and severely throughout the body, known as anaphylaxis. This situation is considered extremely severe if associated with dizziness or loss of consciousness. In this case it is called anaphylactic shock and is the worst situation of an allergic reaction.

Food allergy is an exaggerated and inappropriate immune response that originates in the body after consumption of certain foods that most people tolerate without problems. Often this type of allergies are confused with other forms of allergic reactions to foods, known as food hypersensitivity. Although you can not deny the evidence of the number of people diagnosed with food allergies, researchers in this field say the problem of the high incidence and increased food allergies may be overstated. According to the World Allergy Organization, only a small percentage of adults ranges from 1% to 3% have a food allergy. Among children under four years the percentage increases to 6% -8%.

An investigation conducted by the University of Portsmouth (UK) reveals that the number of children with food allergy diagnosis clear or food hypersensitivity is considerably lower than their parents believe. The scientists conducted a study of all children born in the Isle of Wight (south coast of England) and compared the results of the incidence of allergy and food hypersensitivity with a similar study conducted 20 years ago. The conclusion was that in two decades, allergies had risen dramatically and the number of allergy was not as high as previously thought. According to their parents, 807 children were allergic or intolerant to any kind of food but after subjecting them to different clinical diagnosis, only 5% reported food allergy.

Another study, in this case German and directed by Axel Trautmann, Department of Dermatology, recruited 419 patients admitted to the clinic for suspected food allergies show. After undergoing a diagnostic, just over half of the patients, 214 (51.1%) showed a positive immune response demonstrating the diagnosis. In the remaining 205 patients (48.9%), despite personal suspicions, the results of medical tests ruled out food allergy. Both researchers found, therefore, that exaggerates the condition of food allergies among the population.

Food Allergy Treatment

1. The treatment for food allergies is to eliminate the offending food diet. So simple and resounding.

2. There are no effective preventive drugs or desensitization treatment, contrary to what occurs with other allergies.

3. Some hypoallergenic diets offer good results, but are very severe and should not be kept for a long time. Thus, we have created other less severe than can be followed for months.

4. The prevention of food allergy should begin in childhood, shortly after birth. According to WHO, exclusive breastfeeding, delayed introduction of eggs, fish and nuts, and zinc supplementation of 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight for six months, boosts immunity, especially in low birth weight.

5. The infants allergic to cow’s milk should be fed exclusively on breast-feeding and the mother will follow a diet free of cow’s milk, eggs or fish because of the passage into breast milk allergen. Sometimes, children tolerate soy milk or hydrolyzed casein, which are a good substitute in most cases.

6. Children with early symptoms of allergy take longer to tolerate certain foods, but after a few years can (usually) return to consume them, placing them back on a phased basis and in small quantities.

Food Allergies Causes

Food borne allergies are experiencing a notable increase. Its incidence has doubled in the last 25 years, and in addition to genetic and environmental factors, a number of factors appear to strongly influence the growth of this type of disease: Among them, let us note the introduction of cereals in the diet of infants, begins to universalize from the 60s. Cereal proteins have large capacities allergenic.

Another factor behind the rise of food allergies is the increased consumption of exotic fruits, newly introduced in the market, to which our body is not accustomed. According to WHO, low birth weight is also crucial. Babies weighing less than 2,500 grams (9% of newborns in Spain) show an impaired immune response, poor, and are more prone to allergic and infectious diseases.

Finally, the doctors consider that give bottles too early instead of breastfeeding, is another factor explaining the increase in allergies.

Food Allergens and Parasites

There are hidden allergens, whose detection is sometimes almost impossible to present in industrially processed foods which to improve its appearance, color and flavor are added substances such as casein, soy protein, wheat gluten, corn or oat derived extracts yeasts.

The egg is hidden in many foods, without being listed in its composition, as in some bakery products and pastry, brushed with egg to give them shiny and bright appearance. Individuals with egg allergy should be careful with vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella and influenza, which contain trace amounts of egg proteins, although in general tend to be well tolerated. Some reactions to these proteins may be more due to gelatin containing its own egg.

Allergies caused by other foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish are more durable in their awareness and can last for decades or for life. In these cases, we must refrain from taking them.

A parasite of fish can cause allergies, sometimes with serious results. The parasite enters humans through ingestion of raw, salted, smoked, pickled or marinated. It is removed by heat and cold. Therefore, frying, baking or grilling fish is the key to prevention. Freezing is also a guarantee, as the parasite larvae die. But we should avoid eating raw fish.

Food Allergy Symptoms

Symptoms of food allergy are hives, eczema and pruritus or itching (on the skin), allergic rhinitis or asthma (a respiratory level) and nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea (at the gastric level.) Some reactions may occur or other, or several of them combined. In some cases, severe reactions occur, such as anaphylactic shock, severe acute bronchospasm, and angioedema of the airways, which may even lead to death.

The diagnosis of food allergy is not easy and at times almost detective work. Although age and allergic manifestations are a clue and guide to the specialist, you have to use specific tests to find the food culprit.

How to Spot Food Allergies

Skin tests are the most used. The so-called prick-prick is to chop the fresh food with a lancet, and then click on the forearm skin of patients with the same instrument and analyze the reaction after 15 minutes. If the result is positive and an allergy is detected, it forms a papule. Also used food challenge, of removing from the diet for two weeks the suspected food and then return to administer it, starting with very small doses and observing the reaction it causes.

The elimination diet is the first choice when it comes to allergies in young children. It dispenses with the suspected food and there is a marked improvement in a few weeks, of course eliminated if the food is responsible. If this does not found the culprit, can be tested with the diet of provocation. This type of testing should be done with the doctor, they are not without risks.

The skin is not only the largest and most important organ our body has, it is also the most sensitive due to its high sensitivity capability, what happens is that some genetic disorders make some individuals inherit contract or other types of allergies manifested in the skin.

We can say that the skin allergies are much more in those individuals who have very dry skin, especially in certain areas of the body. Ostrich leather is known for being very sensitive to different internal and external stimuli, for example, although not very common, people allergic to chocolate tend to have a rash on his arms and chest, while those who are allergic to some kind of fish have rashes on their legs. For these reasons it is necessary that these individuals have a habit of taking care of the skin throughout life to prevent these disorders.

We can define a skin allergy and a sensitivity to a substance that is tolerated in many people and is considered harmless, we can also say that it is a type of hypersensitivity. Most human beings present immune-type reactions when we are exposed to foreign substances or dangerous, in this case the skin allergies are exaggerated immune reactions which cause inflammation or damage. They differ from traditional immune reactions, currently, several studies agreed that at least 15% of the population of each country have some form of allergy.

Tips to Prevent Skin Allergies

If we suffer a type of sensitive skin prone to allergies, then we must follow certain parameters to avoid them as large as possible, we should avoid placing products including skin irritants. Excess moisture is also very harmful and promote skin allergies, thus we make short baths using water as cold as possible. The use of biological detergents to wash clothes to be discarded, it is recommended to use soap for washing machine (it should melt before loading), the fabric softener can be harmful, therefore also be marginalized. Hair shampoos should be used separately every time we bathe, it is done so that it does not touch damaged skin.

Most of the time the hoarse voice can be attributed to a mild illness or respiratory tract irritation. These conditions disappear after a few days. However, any hoarseness that lasts more than two or three weeks, and also presents hoarseness, coughing and spitting up blood, difficulty swallowing or breathing in enough air, or notice a strange lump in the neck, should be evaluated by a physician.

Stop talking may be the only treatment required for a voice hoarse from overuse or a respiratory infection. This is also the main treatment for contact ulcers. For ulcers caused by gastric juices, may help to treat heartburn. If polyps are the cause of hoarseness, the solution is to remove them. If this is due to relaxation of the vocal cords, the surgeon can surgically remove slack.

Folk Remedies

The grass of the singers as the name implies, was already used by the minstrels in the Middle Ages to treat diseases of the throat and take care of your voice, because of its soothing and expectorant properties. Its use is very simple, with the grass of the singers (Sisymbrium officinale L.) to prepare an infusion by placing a teaspoon of the dried whole plant in a cup of boiling water and let stand for 20 minutes. It may take 3 to 4 cups a day, after meals, or make gargling with the tea ready.

One of our partner says, we recommend a remedy that my grandmother when we’re hoarse is to gargle with juice of cabbage and honey. Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) is rich in anti-ulcer and sulfur compounds and vitamins C and D, while honey is soothing, healing and relieves pain, and give the cabbage juice a pleasant taste. Mix the cabbage juice obtained from fresh leaves, with honey and gargling done, then you can swallow.

Add a glass of pure honey, half a glass of aloe (Aloe vera), three tablespoons of rum and three tablespoons of melted butter. Take it slowly leaving as long as possible at the throat. If you add a piece of ginger will increase its ability to cure hoarseness.

Here are some tips for treating or preventing a hoarse voice:

Try not to speak too strong or prolonged. If you need to speak before large groups, use a microphone or megaphone.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body can cause dryness in the throat.

Drink plenty of pure water.

Avoid spicy foods.

Do not whisper.

Rest your voice whenever possible.

Inhale steam for several minutes before bedtime.

Try mint lozenges, gargle with salt water or chew gum to moisten your throat.

Avoid throat clearing. This causes an abnormal vibration of the vocal cords and can increase inflammation.

Why produce an allergic reaction? Well, we could say that it is a response or overreaction of the body in contact with any foreign substance called an allergen. This line could cite three typical female allergies: urticaria, contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis.

What factors come into play for you to develop such an allergy? There are several, but the estate is important because it can be born predisposed to this disease. Also, if one of your parents, let alone two, are allergic have more numbers than anyone else. Another factor we must not forget is stress. Although it might trigger the disease, which may lead to manifest or increase the symptoms. Besides these two factors, we can find a third, a prolonged exposure to certain substances (allergens), such as pollen, certain foods and drugs in the body causing further release of histamine (which causes the allergic reaction).

Oddly enough, a “brew” that can help in relieving allergy and sneezing, is the decoction of licorice. Licorice is a plant especially recommended for allergy problems. This is nothing new. The Egyptians, for at least 3,000 years, regarded the licorice as a genuine medicine. To name something else, we can say that traditional Chinese medicine used this plant to treat hepatitis, jaundice, vomiting, inflammation, constipation … and of course, anti-allergic.

But back to the subject of allergies and the decoction of licorice. Boil a handful of chopped licorice root (30 grams) in one liter of water for about 5 minutes. When you begin to feel allergy symptoms, take a teaspoon of the decoction three times a day for six days. Refrain from preparing this remedy if you’re hypertensive.

If you think this remedy sweet enough, do not miss the next now. Curiously, the honey, the product of the flowers and pollen, has been used since the “dawn of time” to combat the symptoms of allergies. You can take a tablespoon of honey every morning. In this way strengthen your body against external attacks thanks to its antibacterial properties.

Let’s see how we can treat the symptoms more typical of spring allergies. For example, let’s start first by the typical stuffy or runny “what can we do? Well, adds a few mullein leaves in boiling water and mists covering you make the head with a towel. Take three cups a day for the duration of symptoms.

And when they bite your eyes and swollen? Soak in cold water and two bags of chamomile clip it on your eyes, for about ten minutes. What can you do to relieve sore throat and cough? Become a quince cream, honey and lemon juice, you will see how quickly soothe the throat.

Do not scratch because you can cause injury. If you feel very itchy, apply ice or onion juice. As an alternative to antihistamines can take stinging nettle infusion. Moisturizers can also use calendula, vitamin E, or Vaseline if your skin is very dry. To prevent injuries from becoming infected, mullein leaves cook and wash the affected area. A warm bath with two good tablespoons of oatmeal. Drink plenty of water to cleanse your body. Take nutritional supplements selenium and zinc bearing to improve the immune system …

Allergies as we know are a body’s defense response that is manifested in an exaggerated manner when in contact with certain substances from abroad. Allergies in infants and small children is a growing problem for both parents and children. Allergies, especially seasonal allergies, best prevented by avoiding exposure to allergens or (carriers allergy). But it is unlikely to avoid these allergens as certain types of allergens are always present outside the area. Allergies affect many people around the world. If you have never had allergies, you can not picture it can take a toll on the quality of your life.

According to studies by scientists, have resulted in increasing the risk of allergies and even asthma can damage the cardiovascular system, especially the heart. The antibodies produced during an allergic reaction are associated with increased risk of a heart attack.

Foods that commonly cause allergies include eggs, milk, meat, peanuts, shellfish, oranges, strawberries and wheat. To see if you are allergic to any of them, stop eating for at least four months. If they begin to decrease or stop symptoms such as skin rashes, nasal congestion, fatigue, joint pain, the likelihood is that you are allergic to these substances. Return to eat those foods once a week, but each one separately, so you’ll find which one is the one that hurts. Once you’ve identified what the food allergen, delete it from your daily diet to four months before being re-tested. When incorporated again, do it in small quantities and so find a level of consumption with which they have reactions or symptoms.

It has been shown that allergy to peanuts is the most dangerous for people especially sensitive to this type of food. This fruit or seeds, whatever you want to call, you can create potential threats to the life of a human being with problems of this type of allergy. The immediate symptoms include swelling in the area of the mouth and airways and the dangerous rise in blood pressure.

Pollen allergy is seasonal. Trees, weeds and grasses release these tiny particles in the air to fertilize other plants. Pollen is difficult to avoid. Individuals who suffer from allergies should avoid outdoor activities during peak pollen times. Pollen has different forms and is composed of small grains, ranging anywhere from 3 to 200 micrometers. Their pollen is light enough to go the extra distance, unlike the heavier pollen from plants.

On the other hand, experts indicate that the use of certain antibiotics can cause allergies. Studies show that consistent use of antibiotics during the first year of life of a human being, increase the risk of asthma and other allergies in adulthood. Now that you know, be aware and not self-medicate their children. Consult a doctor first. Also, the abuse of these medications in adults disrupt the balance and smooth functioning of the gastrointestinal flora bringing the increase of yeast in the body. The excess yeast disrupts the gastrointestinal mucosa, which serves as a protective barrier and helps prevent the passage of undigested food particles into the bloodstream. Take the necessary precautions, since it is a very serious issue: when the barriers are broken, those food particles slip on the other side into thinking the body which are hazardous which leads to a rejection and produces a number of allergies to different types food, and increases all the allergies that we had beforehand.
